Ball Valve Knowledge | The "Flexible Hub" of the Pipeline System

There is a very crucial component in the piping system - the ball valve.

What is a ball valve?

A ball valve, as a type of valve used in pipeline systems to control the flow of fluids and regulate their flow rate, has an opening and closing element in the form of a spherical body with a circular hole. By rotating the ball, the valve can be opened or closed, allowing for precise control of the fluid flow, much like installing a flexible "rotating switch" on the pipeline.

The Working Principle of Ball Valves Unveiled

Ball valves operate mainly based on the principle of rotational sealing. The valve stem is connected to the ball. When the valve stem is operated, the ball will rotate around its own axis. When the hole of the ball and the pipeline are aligned, the valve opens and the fluid flows smoothly like a happy fish; when the ball rotates 90°, the hole is perpendicular to the pipeline, and the valve closes, cutting off the flow of the fluid. The entire process is like the opening and closing of a revolving door, simple and efficient.

Various types of ball valves

Floating ball valve

Under the pressure of the medium, the spherical body can slightly float on the valve seat. This type is often used in small-diameter and low-pressure pipelines. Its advantages are simple structure and reliable sealing; its disadvantage is that when the diameter is large, the spherical body is greatly affected by the medium pressure, and the operating torque will increase. Imagine that the spherical body is like "dancing" on the valve seat, automatically adjusting the fit with the valve seat to achieve a good seal.

Fixed ball valve

The sphere is fixed in the center of the valve body, and the valve stem only drives the sphere to rotate. It is suitable for high-pressure and large-diameter pipelines. Due to the fixation of the sphere, it can withstand higher pressure, but the structure is relatively complex and the cost is also higher. It is like the sphere is firmly "pinned" in the valve body. Even when subjected to high-pressure fluid impact, it remains as stable as a mountain.

Three-way ball valve

There are three channels, resembling a three-way intersection. They can achieve the functions of splitting, merging or reversing the medium. In chemical production, it can change the flow direction of materials as needed. It is like a "traffic controller" in the pipeline system, flexibly guiding the flow of fluids along different paths.

Applications of Ball Valves

Family scene

In the water supply system of a household, ball valves are used to control the supply of cold and hot water. For example, the ball valve before the water heater can conveniently cut off the water flow, facilitating equipment maintenance.

Industrial sector

In the petrochemical industry, it is used to transport various corrosive media. The ball valve, with its excellent corrosion resistance and sealing performance, ensures smooth production. In the power industry, it is employed to control the flow of steam and cooling water, ensuring the stable operation of power generation equipment.

Tips for Installation and Maintenance of Ball Valves

Installation Tips

When installing, make sure that the diameter of the ball valve is consistent with the pipeline to avoid "tapered ends" which may affect the fluid transportation. At the same time, the valve stem should be installed at an easily operable position to facilitate the daily opening and closing.

Maintenance Instructions

Regularly inspect the wear conditions of the ball and the sealing parts. If you find that the sealing part is aging or there are scratches on the surface of the ball, replace them in time. Lubricate the valve stem every year to ensure smooth rotation and extend the service life of the ball valve.

Although ball valves are small in size, they play a crucial role in the piping system and are the "flexible hubs" that ensure the orderly flow of fluids.
